[IMG]The two BMW M3 GTRs sporting the numbers 42 and 43 were first and second to cross the start/finish line in the Nьrburgring 24 Hour Race. After a total of 143 laps, Dirk Mьller (Burbach), Jцrg Mьller (Hьckelhoven) and Hans-Joachim Stuck (Ellmau), watched by BMW Group's head of development Professor Burkhard Gцschel, took victory in the 32nd edition of the Eifel marathon. The drivers of the second BMW M3 GTR, bearing the number 43 - Pedro Lamy (PRT), Duncan Huisman (NDL) and Boris Said (USA) - were the second team to pass the chequered flag after 142 laps, clinching a double victory for Team BMW Motorsport.

"I was sweating it out too all the way from Montreal, and was kept permanently posted on the latest situation by GPS and data transmission," said BMW Motorsport Director Mario Theissen at the Formula One Grand Prix in Canada. "This is a fantastic result. A huge compliment to the team and the drivers, who always managed to keep a cool head and made the right decisions in spite of the most challenging conditions. BMW Motorsport has added another memorable one-two victory to its numerous touring car successes at the Nordschleife. The two BMW M3 GTRs ran like clockwork. After their commanding successes in the ALMS, they have now corroborated their qualities in Europe as well. We are well equipped to take on the next 24-hour race at Spa."

With this, its seventh one-two win, BMW continues its story of success in the Nьrburgring 24 Hour Races. The company with the blue and white emblem has claimed overall victory for the 17th time. The last occasion that a BMW made it to the top of the podium was in 1998, in a success which made racing history: the BMW 320d became the first diesel-powered model to win a 24-hour event.

Team Manager Charly Lamm noted with tears in his eyes, "Of course we were bearing the burden of what happened in 2003. You come here and you give your all, but a 24-hour race isn't over until 24 hours have elapsed. There's always room for some drama just before the end, as we witnessed among other participants here. What can I say? It was a dream and it has come true. Everything worked out perfectly for us."

One of this year's drivers had been in the winning team of 1998: Hans-Joachim Stuck. For the 53-year-old, it is the third overall win of his career. Stuck's victories at the Nordschleife have always doubled as premieres: in 1970 he won the first 24 Hour Race on the Nьrburgring, 28 years later came victory in the BMW 320d, and now the first triumph in a GT model. That takes the tally of this seasoned driver to three wins each in the Le Mans 24 Hours and in the Eifel classic.

"Psychologically it was the most strenuous race I have ever entered," said Stuck after the BMW M3 GTR had crossed the finishing line. "The difficult weather conditions meant you were constantly riding along a razor's edge. But despite that it was tremendous fun. I have to express my special praise for the engineers. They handed us a perfectly functioning BMW M3 GTR."

Stuck's team-mates Dirk Mьller and Jцrg Mьller, by contrast, celebrated their first overall victory in a 24-hour race. "I'm just over the moon," said Dirk Mьller. "In the last laps I was concentrating on avoiding mistakes at all costs. When I crossed the finishing line, I went totally goose-pimply all over."

Jцrg Mьller could hardly believe how hitch-free the 24-hour classic turned out: "It was almost too perfect. We never touched another car once and we had the right tyres on almost throughout. It was the greatest race I have ever had. It's a dream."

    24h Nьrburgring - Bulletin 4

The 24 Hour Race at the Nьrburgring is about to enter its final and decisive stage. After more than 20 largely trouble-free hours and 119 laps of the Eifel track, the number 42 BMW M3 GTR continues as overall leader ahead of car number 43. In second place, running one lap behind the car of German drivers Dirk Mьller, Jцrg Mьller and Hans-Joachim Stuck, is the second GT coupй competing under the auspices of Schnitzer Motorsport, with drivers Pedro Lamy (PRT), Duncan Huisman (NLD) and Boris Said (USA) taking it in turns at the wheel.

In the early morning hours, Stuck covered eleven laps of the 24.358 kilometre track. Heavy rain and some dense fog in places proved a major hindrance, and many drivers became embroiled in accidents or skidded with occasionally serious consequences.

The drivers of Team BMW Motorsport were spared any such incidents. On lap 94, Jцrg Mьller took over from Stuck at the wheel of car number 42. The 34-year-old drove his ten laps on wet tyres while his team-mate Dirk Mьller took to the track with intermediates after the scheduled driver change on lap 104. "At the outset of my stint it was wet on the Grand Prix circuit, while the rear section of the course was dry. By the end it was the complete reverse," said Dirk Mьller of the challenging conditions he faced.

At the next driver change, when Stuck returned to the controls of the BMW M3 GTR on lap 115, the car was shod with intermediates again to cope with the constantly changing track conditions.

The car number 43 has similarly been running on cut slicks since its pit stop on lap 104. After lap 88, Huisman had handed the BMW M3 GTR over to Said, who in turn vacated the cockpit for Lamy on lap 98.

With less than four hours to go in this 24-hour classic in the Eifel, Huisman is driving in second place behind the wheel of the BMW M3 GTR. Stuck, meanwhile, in the leading car number 42, is trying to increase the gap to his team-mate.

    24h Nьrburgring - Bulletin 3

Team BMW Motorsport has managed to defend its lead in the Nьrburgring 24 Hour Race during the night as well. After 82 laps, the number 42 BMW M3 GTR continues at the head of the field. The other GT coupй run under the aegis of Schnitzer Motorsport (car number 43) lies one lap behind in second place.

Team manager Charly Lamm is happy with progress so far in this endurance classic in the Eifel: "Due to the unstable weather situation, the choice of tyres was crucial in the first half of the race. At least the racing crew had no chance to get bored. But looking at the halfway results, our drivers are clearly coping well with the perfectly functioning BMW M3 GTRs."

Dirk Mьller (Burbach), leading the field in car number 42, had handed the wheel over to Hans-Joachim Stuck (Ellmau) at the end of lap 54. During the night, Stuck brought all his experience of 52 starts in the 24 Hour Race on this 24.358 kilometre circuit to bear. After ten laps he vacated the cockpit for Jцrg Mьller (Hьckelhoven). Afterwards conditions worsened once more, necessitating an early pit stop to take on wet tyres. Team BMW Motorsport used this opportunity on lap 71 to carry out the scheduled driver change with Dirk Mьller. Eleven laps later, Stuck returned to the cockpit of car number 42.

After lap 54, Pedro Lamy (PRT) handed over the controls of the second BMW M3 GTR (number 43) to Duncan Huisman (NLD). The 32-year-old soon advanced into second place to give Team BMW Motorsport its double lead, which currently still stands. Boris Said (USA) and Lamy, who manned the wheel of the 500 bhp car on the two subsequent stints, consolidated this second position behind car number 42. After lap 80, Huisman took over at the wheel of car number 43 again. Weather conditions in the Eifel remained unpredictable during the night. Sudden cloudbursts meant drivers had to exercise the greatest caution on the track. "I was still running on slicks when the rain started again," reported Said. "That's why I had to cut back radically on my speed. The track was literally flooded in places. I saw a lot of accidents and I'm glad to have made it back to the pits unscathed."

After a driving time of fourteen hours and a total of 82 laps so far, Team BMW Motorsport with Stuck/Huisman in a one-two lead is in a promising position to maintain its successful performance for the remainder of this 32nd edition of the 24-hour classic.

    24h Nьrburgring - Bulletin 2

So far the 24 Hour Race on the Nьrburgring is running according to plan for Team BMW Motorsport. The BMW M3 GTR (car number 42) is in the lead after eight hours of driving. The second GT coupй fielded by Schnitzer Motorsport lies in third place with a gap of 7.46 minutes behind the leader.

Dirk Mьller (GER) is currently driving the car number 42 on the 24.358 kilometre track. At the end of lap 43 the 28-year-old had taken over at the wheel from Jцrg Mьller (GER), who had relieved Hans-Joachim Stuck (GER) on lap 35. Stuck put in an impressive endurance performance. The 53-year-old had remained at the wheel of the 500 bhp BMW M3 GTR for 2 hours 20 minutes, reaching the maximum driving period permitted by the race management. "The conditions are incredible," said Stuck after his 13-lap session. "Even with wet tyres it's difficult to keep the car on the track in this rain. It's a bit like water-skiing."

The extreme weather conditions on the combined Nьrburgring Nordschleife and short version of the Grand Prix course persisted, which meant that Stuck had to follow up his scheduled tyre change after lap 28 with another pit stop just one lap later to swap his fresh intermediates for wet tyres. Once again the track was doused by heavy rainfall.

Pedro Lamy (PRT) has been out on track in the second BMW M3 GTR (car number 43) since lap 38. The 32-year-old climbed into the cockpit after his team-mates Boris Said (USA) and Duncan Huisman (NLD). Huisman had just experienced a moment of fright: as he was heading for the pit lane, he spun on the track and came to a halt immediately in front of Stuck, who was following him. Stuck, driving car number 42, just managed to hit the brakes in time. "This is the craziest race I've ever been involved in," said Huisman, "I went into a spin on slicks as the track was getting wetter again."

Both BMW M3 GTRs are currently driving with intermediates on a drying track. But weather conditions in the Eifel are liable to change at any moment.

    24h Nuerburgring - Bulletin 1

After a turbulent start to the race and three and a half hours' driving, the number 42 BMW M3 GTR is in the lead in the Nьrburgring 24 Hour Race.

During the initial phase of the marathon event in the Eifel, the weather underwent several changes as heavy showers alternated with sunny periods. It made it very difficult to anticipate conditions on the 24.358 kilometre track.

Team BMW Motorsport, however, was able to draw on Team Manager Charly Lamm's years of experience. He first opted for intermediate tyres for both cars and then decided to switch to slicks on lap five. The timing of the driver change from Jцrg Mьller (Hьckelhoven) to Dirk Mьller (Burbach) also proved ideal as the car was able to take on wet tyres without losing any time.

Starting driver Jцrg Mьller advanced from fourth place to the front of the field. "Our tyre choice was a stroke of luck," said the 34-year-old, who vacated the cockpit for Dirk Mьller after eight laps. "The driver change came at exactly the right moment, allowing us to switch to wet tyres at the same time," said Jцrg Mьller.

Dirk Mьller headed for the pits on lap 15 to have his front windscreen cleaned of oil, and the team took the opportunity to change from wets back to intermediates. At the end of lap 20, leading the race, he handed over to Hans-Joachim Stuck (Elmau).

The number 43 BMW M3 GTR started from tenth position on the grid with Boris Said at the wheel. After lap five the American swapped with Pedro Lamy (PRT). Ten laps later Dutch driver Duncan Huisman also got his first taste of the race. A further switch to wet tyres became necessary on lap 20. Currently Huisman is in fourth place in the number 43 BMW M3 GTR. The gap to leading driver Stuck is 6:30 minutes.
